Films of the Year!!

December 9, 2010

I’ve watched some crap this year (not actually crap although that probably be more entertaining than watching Predators or Brooklyn’s Finest) However, two films that stand out from the crowd this year are:

This is film-making of the highest order, it boggles the mind how great this movie is it bloody is amazing. I’ve always been a huge fan of Christopher Nolan’s work (apart from Insomnia which doesn’t work at all) and I was worried that Inception would be a failure due to the mehness of the Man Who Is A Bat…films. (they really aren’t that good) but Inception blows them out of the water.

What I love about the film is the sheer audacity of it, the sheer scale of it and how the film is one big reality questioning conundrum wrapped up in a heist/action movie. It’s huge in scale but intimate with its characters.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button gets a lot of slack but it’s not a bad film; mawkish and often cringeworthy but  it still is watchable, flawed but watchable. When I heard Fincher was directing a movie about Facebook I was like oh noes this is the downward spiral. What Fincher has delivered (and Aaron Sorkin as well) is a film for the ages. It shouldn’t work, a film about a college student creating a website and then watching some people try to sue him….yawn. Yet, it totally works and that’s the magic of film!

It’s beautifully shot and edited and brilliant use of CGI. The writing is sublime and Sorkin’s work has always been hit-and-miss for me, The West Wing can become too much for me sometimes and his film work is meh yet in this film he has managed to use the framework of Facebook creation to write about themes prevalent in this age of the internet. He weaves themes of isolation, friendship, social hierarchy etc delicately through the film so it’s never in yo’ face.

Great films.
